In a paper that won the 2002 McKinsey Award, strategy gurus Michael Porter and Mark Kramer wrote: the ability (of businesses) to recruit appropriate human resources, for example may depend on a number of social factors that companies can influence, such as the local educational system. It is with background that SBS (Strathmore Business School) invited a cross section of business leaders in the country for a breakfast meeting at the Serena Hotel on Wednesday, 17th February to share with them its expansion plans. The theme of the meeting was 'Great Africans Transforming Africa'.
The chief speaker at the event was Mr David Nalo the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of East African Co-operation. He talked about the business opportunities in an integrated East African market. He observed that the University and SBS are moving in tandem with regional integration.
SBS vision is to be a top business school in Africa able to transform managers and their institutions, and through them, the societies in which they operate. It was ranked the third business school in Africa in the January 2010 webometrics ranking of universities. See: http://business-schools.webometrics.info/ SBS plans to expand its classroom capacity from the current 120 to 800 seats. The project will cost Kshs365 million. SBS has contributed Kshs100 million to the project, and is looking for Kshs265 million. SBS hopes to complete the project by December. Dr Edward Mungai, the Dean of SBS said that business leaders could help the school in many ways such as: advising it on business trends and training needs in their sectors, being guest lecturers in their areas of specialization, recommending students and faculty, sponsoring the building or parts of it, recommending SBS to other possible partners, and spreading word about the project. Some friends of Strathmore led by Mr Zeph Mbugua are organizing a golf tournament as part of the SBS's fund raising efforts. The aim of the tournament to be held on 16th April aims to raise Kshs50 million. The breakfast meeting was organized with the support of Chartis Insurance Company. Presentations made: Dr Edward Mungai and Zeph Mbugua
